HARES: BeerSkuller and Pjeter
WHERE: an old aqueduct along the Erzeni River across from the Pellumbas cave trail (north side of the river); same as hash 675 last January.
DIRECTIONS: Leave Tirana to the south toward Elbasan. From the Sauk traffic light, go about 8.5 km to a JET OIL gas station on the right side of the road (BEFORE you get to the bridge across the Erzeni). This is BEFORE the turnoff to Petrele. Turn left opposite the gas station and continue up the paved road. After the pavement ends, continue down the gravel road to the parking area on a ridge overlooking the Erzeni river, opposite the village of Pellumbas.
DESCRIPTION: The aqueduct is level (it's an aqueduct!!) and you will walk on a trail near it or inside of it for about 2.6 km each way. There will be some muddy areas. To get to the aqueduct from the parking area, you will need to descent on a trail for about 3/4 km. Special treat for the runners: you will go over the top of the ridge to the lake on the other side and then return via the aqueduct - lots of brambles, loose rock, slippery trails and at least one opportunity to fall off a cliff. Walkers tired of the aqueduct can follow a ridge road/trail with great views of the valley.
NOTE: In the last 10 meters of the aqueduct before you get to the dam and waterfall there is a narrow wall with a steep dropoff. Those not wishing to risk falling into the river 20 meters below can walk inside the aqueduct. However, it may have several inches of water and mud, so you might want to bring water shoes.
The river should be beautiful, with lots of waterfalls and rapids. Views of the canyon and the mountain ranges are spectacular!
