hash 724 - The New Year's Hash - Tujan

WHERE: The village of Tujan, above the main cemetery northwest of Tirana

DIRECTIONS: Drive northwest on the Dibar Road past the general hospital and toward the large cemetery northwest of Tirana. Take the right fork as you approach the cemetery toward the main entrance. Pass the cemetery and continue to the village of Tufine. The paved road becomes a narrow gravel road and continues into the mountain. We will park in a small valley before the village of Tujan.

DESCRIPTION: For the runners, a challenging trail that will take you along the ridgeline, then down to the river, and finally back to the village of Tujan. Walkers will follow an easy road which becomes a trail and joins the ancient road (Rruga e Arberit) to Dibar on the border between Albania and Macedonia. Legend has it that the Apostle Paul in the first century AD walked along this road and founded four churches in the vicinity of Tujan. More recently, the area around Tujan was the scene of the final battle between King Zog with his Serbian supporters and the forces of Bishop Fan Noli in 1925. Noli was defeated and fled Albania. (Runners may also wish to follow the walker trail and continue along the road for 60 minutes and then return.)

Note: BeerSkuller and Totally Pointless will bring gluhwein. Anyone wishing to bring some Christmas cheer to share is welcome to do so.
